Sailing Vessel Voyager

If you are interested in boats, here's info on the sailing vessel Voyager. It is owned by Rick & Suza and the following details are Rick’s words. “Voyager is a Reliance 44, one of 46 built in Ontario, Canada. They were all built as "bare hull & decks", meaning the factory only did fiberglass work. All interior & systems installations were left to the buyer.  The original owner bought hull #3 and spent 20 years finishing the boat.  We purchased CanajunA (it was Canadian, eh?) in 1998 and promptly changed the name to Voyager.  Voyager was originally built as a ketch, but for many reasons, we decided to remove the mizzen mast which then made Voyager into a bastardized sloop.  But then I installed an inner fore stay which converted the bastardized sloop into an even more bastardized cutter.  It's not really a cutter because the mast step is too far forward to be a real cutter.  So now it is called a slutter.  That's not my joke either - that is the popular, but non-technical name for a sloop with an inner fore stay, part sloop, part cutter.  A slutter.”   That's more info than you needed to know!

When & Where...

So here are some details about the actual trip…  We will be sailing as part of the Vasco da Gama Rally.  A rally is an organized event where a number of boats travel together. The goal of this one is to create a safe trip through an ²interesting part of the world” (the organizer’s words).  It also helps with paperwork and visas throughout the trip.  It starts in mid January from Cochin, India and travels to Oman, Yemen, Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, and through the Suez Canal to Turkey.  Estimated arrival in Turkey is early to mid May.  I am excited to be starting in India.  If you know me – you know how much I love Indian food! It has been almost ten years since I have been in India (I was in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai for work). I can't wait for the taste of the spices!

Getting Ready

My plan is to take 4+ months and go sailing with my good friends on their boat, the sailing vessel Voyager. Since I have been asked by quite a few people how they can follow my journey, I am starting this blog. I am not much of a writer (there's a reason I became an engineer), but I will do my best to post updates for those interested in my travels.
It is really starting to sink in how much I need to do to get ready for this trip. Being away from home and work (I am taking a leave of absence) is not as simple as one would hope.
