Thailand & Cambodia

It was wonderful to travel to Thailand again and to see a little bit of Cambodia. I met my friend Ona in Bangkok to celebrate our birthdays. We spent just a couple days in Bangkok we before we journeyed to Cambodia. We took the local train from Bangkok to the Cambodian border (6 hours), walked across the border, took one bus, another bus and then a tuk tuk to get to our hotel in Siem Reap. The next day we did an off road bicycle tour through Angkor Archaeological Park that was one of the highlights of the trip. We visited parts of the site where there were no other tourists and really enjoyed going through the temples and the villages. We rode over 40 km and were caught in a downpour near the end, but what a fun experience. The  next morning we went back before dawn to watch the sun rise over Angkor Wat. After a bus trip back to Bangkok, we took the night train in a sleeper car to Chiang Mai. In Chiang Mai we took a cooking class and learned to make some tasty dishes. We also met some Kwaj friends for dinner (we crossed paths in Bangkok - you see Kwaj people everywhere!). After Chiang Mai it was another night train in a sleeper car to Bangkok and several days in Bangkok to see the sights. Of course we had to work around President Obama's schedule (they closed some sights for his visit).
We did our best to enjoy the wonderful local food and as many massages as we could squeeze in.

This first group of pictures are from Angkor in Cambodia.

New York!

The Survivor Tree at the 9/11 Memorial
The Big Apple!
My good friend Misti and I met for a weekend of fun and relaxation. I have been to New York before but every time is different. This time it started with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial. It is so sad to think about the violence in the world. I cannot understand why we can't do a better job of accepting each other and living more peacefully.
We enjoyed a couple shows on Broadway, Evita and Wicked (the Wicked Witch was not so wicked after all).
We also visited the Statue of Liberty, had good food and stayed in a great apartment on the Hudson River thanks to my brother.

Tobago & the Tobago Heritage Festival

Tobago is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy yourself. We spent 12 days in Charlotteville which is a local fishing village. We are lucky and are here during the annual Tobago Heritage Festival. There are different events in a number of the towns around the island. In Charlotteville we watched a parade with a small steel drum band and later in the evening we watched the Tobago Dance Festival. After Charlotteville we moved to Great Courland Bay and the town of Plymouth. The bay is named for the Duke of Courland who ruled here in the 1600s. Courland (or Kurzeme in Latvian) is a region in Latvia.

In Plymouth we have seen the Calypso and steel pan band competition and enjoyed more of the local food. The music went on all night and we could hear it on the boat! The next day was the Masquerade Theatre Cultural Showcase, they engaged the audience and it was quite entertaining.

There is good diving also. The soft corals and the colors of the coral are very vibrant and different from what you see in the Marshall Islands. The water is warm and clear, though there are definitely currents that must be taken in to consideration.
Next stop, Store Bay at the southern end of the island.

Tobago

We are now in Tobago and very glad to be here. The passage was not much fun. As Suza says, we had a little of everything come our way. It was an uncomfortable and sometimes stormy sail so we were all very happy to set anchor on the 12th.
We are starting to explore the island. It is lush, with mangoes, avocados and bananas growing everywhere. The people are friendly, the water is clear and the food is good. What more can you ask for?
